DETAILS
The U.S Supreme Court and other federal courts are crucial to our democracy, part of the Constitution’s system of checks and balances with the executive and legislative branches. The  LWVUS has just completed a one-year study of the federal judiciary system. The goal is to bring a proposed position with possible recommendations for changes to the judiciary system to the national Council in June of this year.

The study includes concerns about judicial accountability, transparency, independence and ethics. In recent years, these issues have been of high interest and importance to many of us.

At our March 1 member meeting, we will discuss these issues and seek to come to a consensus on some basic principles to guide possible reform proposals.

The study consists of 10 policy briefs. We will focus on only a few: Court Legitimacy, Ethics, and Proposed Structural Reform Proposals. Please read at least one or two of the policy briefs so you will be prepared to participate in the discussion.

Here are PDFs of the policy briefs we will be discussing:

--Study Guide (overview of the study and consensus process)

--Court Legitimacy policy brief

--Ethics policy brief

--Structural Reform policy brief

You can find all 10 policy briefs and other background information here:

You are welcome to invite friends to the meeting to listen to the presentation and discussion, but LWVUS rules do not permit non-members to participate in consensus study discussions.
